Pink is a 2016 Indian courtroom drama film directed by Aniruddha Roy Chowdhury, written by Ritesh Shah, and produced by Rashmi Sharma Telefilms (Pawan Kumar and Rashmi Sharma), Sheel Kumar[4] and Shoojit Sircar.[5][6][7]

It stars Amitabh Bachchan, Taapsee Pannu, Kirti Kulhari, Angad Bedi, Andrea Tariang, Piyush Mishra, and Dhritiman Chatterjee.[8][9][10][11] It was released on 16 September 2016.[12][13][14][15][16] The Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) granted the film a U/A certificate with four verbal cuts.[17] The film was appreciated by both the audience and the critics.[18]

The film was specially screened for the Rajasthan Police so as to train them to be sensitive and sensible about women's rights and dignity.[19] The film was also invited for a special screening at the United Nations headquarters in New York City.[20][21]

On 4 November 2016 the movie completed a successful 50 day run at the movie theatres.[22]

The movie opens with Raunak Anand a.k.a. Dumpy (Raashul Tandon) and Ankit Malhotra (Vijay Verma) rushing their friend, Rajveer Singh (Angad Bedi) who is profusely bleeding from an injury to his forehead, to a hospital in South Delhi. He nearly loses his eye, but is treated. They nervously refrain from filing a police complaint. Elsewhere three girls, Meenal Arora (Taapsee Pannu), Falak Ali (Kirti Kulhari) and Andrea Tariang (Andrea Tariang) drive nervously in a Taxi and reach their apartment. They look disoriented, and it is apparent that they have something to do with the incident.

Meenal and her friends try to carry on with their normal life. They are independent and self-sufficient women staying together in a South Delhi locality. Meenal goes out for her morning run as usual, where she sees and old man staring at her. He turns out to be Deepak Sehgal(Amitabh Bachchan), their neighbor. Eventually a series of threats arise apparently from Rajveer’s friends with Falak losing her job and others being followed. They are discouraged by a police officer from filing a complaint stating it would make their daily life miserable, whereas in reality the police are aware that the boys are “well connected” and are backed-up by Rajveer’s uncle who is a powerful politician from South Delhi.

Meenal is kidnapped by Rajveer’s friends during her morning run. Deepak Sehgal who watches this but is helpless, gets to know from the ACP that they are involved in a brawl with the nephew of a South Delhi Politician. Meenal is molested by Rajveer’s friends in the closed moving Car and dropped back at night after being warned. The next day, Meenal is arrested by Haryana police from her apartment apparently based on a complaint from Ranveer labeling the girls as prostitutes and charging Meenal with attempt to Murder. Deepak Sehgal visits Falak and Andrea at their apartment and helps them with the bail procedures. It turns out that Deepak Sehgal was a reputed lawyer now retired. He decides to come out of his retirement and help the girls although he has to take care of his ailing wife Sara (Mamta Shankar), and has to put up with his own health issues related to ageing.

In the courtroom, Rajveer’s lawyer, Prashant Mehra (Piyush Mishra), presents his client, Rajveer’s version of the story of what happened in the private resort, as follows: “Rajveer and his friends meet with Meenal and her friend at a rock concert. The boys invite the three girls for dinner in a Private Hotel Resort, where they have a drink. The girls provoke the boys and demand money, all signs indicating that they are prostitutes. Rajveer refuses to pay and an enraged Meenal hits him in the head with a bottle and flees.” Prashant’s argument focuses on the poor moral character of girls. Whereas the statements from the girls indicate that the girls were tricked into such a compromising situation and forced against their will. They refused and said “No”. Deepak’s argument focuses on the “consent” and a Woman’s Right. A series of interesting and chilling courtroom arguments ensues in the following days. Towards the end of the trial, Rajveer gets provoked and unintentionally states that the girls “got what they deserved”. Deepak criticizes the regressed views of the society where women are stereotyped as spoilt and as prostitutes if, they come home late, if they move out of their home, want to be independent, if they drink, if they giggle and so on, but none of these apply to men.

In a chilling Closing remarks, Deepak mentions that his client said “NO” which is not just a word, but a statement and implies a woman’s right. NO simply means NO and doesn’t require further explanation. It can come from anyone, a girlfriend a sex-worker, or even your wife. The court rules in favor of the girls acquitting them, whereas Rajveer, Ankit, and Dumpy are remanded with the final verdict of their punishment pending. Deepak gains the respect of all those gathered, including Prashant.

The closing credits picturizes what really happened in the Resort, with the events leading up to Meenal’s attack on Rajveer.

Production
In early March 2016 Amitabh Bachchan revealed that he was shooting a film in Delhi. It was rumoured that the film was titled "Eve".[23] On 13 March Bachchan denied the rumours and announced through Twitter that the film is titled Pink.[24]

Director-producer Shoojit Sircar informed that Amitabh Bachchan accepted the role and Tapsee Pannu was their first choice.[25] Andrea Tariang was also selected to play the role of one of the girls in the film.[26][27] Tushar Pandey, Raashul Tandon and Arjun Chakraborty are making their debut with this film.[28]

Filming
The shooting of the film began in New Delhi on International Women's Day, 2016.[13] The looks of Amitabh Bachchan in the movie was created by Shoojit Sircar however the idea of wearing the mask was suggested by Amitabh Bachchan since Delhi is very polluted.[29]

During the shoot, Amitabh Bachchan wandered the streets of New Delhi while wearing a costume in which public cannot recognise him.[30] Amitabh Bachchan finished filming his scenes in April 2016.[31]

Taapsee often broke down on the shooting sets as she felt her character was very strong and challenging.[32] She suffered from viral infection during the court scenes and wanted to dub later, however Shoojit felt that her illness would add more authenticity to the scenes.[33] Despite the hardships Taapsee enjoyed and had lots of fun while filming the scenes.[34]

The original climax of Rajvir and his friends winning the case was modified so as not to hurt the sentiments of the audience.[35]

A special screening of the film was held for Amitabh Bachchan's co stars and the leading ladies of Bollywood.[36] However Amitabh Bachchan could not attend the screening due to health issues.[37] Taapsee also arranged a special screening of the film for the Telugu film industry at Hyderabad.[38]

Bishan Singh Bedi, father of Angad Bedi, arranged a special screening of the film in Delhi which was attended by cricketers like Kapil Dev, Virender Sehwag and Yuvraj Singh.[39]
